Save on Energy: Ontario Electricity Conservation Programs

Save on Energy is the brand for Ontario's electricity conservation and demand management programs, administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). While these programs are narrower than the gas utility rebates, they offer meaningful incentives for smart thermostats, efficient equipment, and demand response participation.

What is the Save on Energy program?

Save on Energy is the consumer-facing brand for conservation and demand management programs funded through Ontario's electricity system, administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The programs are delivered through local distribution companies (LDCs) like Toronto Hydro, Alectra, Hydro One, and others.

The available programs and rebate amounts vary by utility. Core offerings typically include smart thermostat rebates, commercial and industrial conservation programs, and demand response programs that pay customers for voluntarily reducing electricity use during peak demand events.

Save on Energy vs Enbridge / HRS for home retrofits

For major insulation and heat pump work, the HRS Program and Enbridge rebates are the primary programs. Save on Energy is most relevant for standalone measures — particularly smart thermostats and demand response participation — that don't require a pre-retrofit audit or contractor coordination.

Smart thermostat rebate

The most commonly accessed Save on Energy rebate for homeowners is the smart thermostat program. Qualifying models (including Ecobee, Google Nest, and others) typically receive a $75 rebate. Applications are usually handled online through your local LDC's rebate portal, and the thermostat can be self-installed.

The same smart thermostat rebate may also be available through Enbridge Gas for homes with natural gas heating — making it possible to stack the electricity utility rebate with the gas utility rebate for qualifying installations.

Demand response programs

Demand response programs pay enrolled customers bill credits in exchange for voluntarily reducing electricity consumption during high-demand grid events (typically hot summer afternoons). Smart thermostats can be enrolled in these programs automatically, raising their temperature setpoint slightly during events. The credits are modest but add up over time, and participation requires no active action once enrolled.

Other Save on Energy measures

Depending on your utility and current program availability, rebates may be available for LED lighting, efficient appliances, and ENERGY STAR products. Commercial and industrial programs are broader and outside the scope of this guide. We confirm current residential availability for each client's specific utility as part of the rebate mapping process.
