Our Process

From first call to completed retrofit — a clear path.

Four steps. No surprises. Independent advice at every stage, with no financial interest in what you buy or who you hire.

How we work with homeowners

1

Free consultation

Every engagement begins with a free 20-minute call. We ask about your home — its age, size, heating system, and any upgrades you've been considering. You ask us anything you want about audits, rebates, and what the process involves.

There's no commitment required and no follow-up sales pressure. If a certified energy audit isn't the right next step for your situation, we'll tell you that.

  • 20 minutes, by phone or video
  • We identify which rebate programs are currently applicable to your home
  • We explain audit costs, timelines, and what the report covers
  • No obligation to proceed
2

Certified home energy audit

A registered energy advisor (REA) certified by Natural Resources Canada conducts a full EnerGuide home evaluation at your property. This is the only way to get objective, measured data about your home's actual energy performance.

The audit includes a blower door test (which pressurizes the house to measure air leakage), a room-by-room inspection, and in most cases thermal imaging. It typically takes 2–4 hours depending on home size.

  • Blower door test measures air changes per hour (ACH) — the most important number in most retrofit plans
  • Thermal imaging identifies insulation gaps and air leakage paths that aren't visible otherwise
  • The resulting EnerGuide label is required for HRS Program, Greener Homes Loan, and other major rebate programs
  • Pre-retrofit audit report locks in your eligibility — no qualifying work can begin before this date
3

Upgrade plan and rebate map

After the audit, we build a prioritized upgrade plan based on the measured data — not on what's easiest to sell. Each recommended measure includes modelled energy savings, estimated payback period, and applicable rebates.

We map every applicable program: HRS Program, Canada Greener Homes Loan, Enbridge rebates, and any utility-specific programs for your area. We identify which measures can be stacked and what the combined rebate potential is before you spend a dollar.

  • Measures ranked by payback period, not upgrade cost
  • Sequencing guidance — air sealing before insulation, envelope before mechanical — prevents costly missteps
  • Combined rebate calculation across all applicable programs
  • Phased plan if you can't do everything at once

Contractor connections and post-retrofit audit

When you're ready to proceed, we connect you with vetted contractors from our network — licensed, reviewed, and selected for quality rather than commission. We receive no referral fees from these connections.

After the work is completed, we coordinate the post-retrofit EnerGuide audit required to claim rebates. We also review all documentation before submission to reduce the chance of application errors that delay payment.

  • Contractor referrals are based on quality and licensing — no financial relationship between us and the installer
  • Post-retrofit audit required for all HRS Program, Greener Homes Loan, and most other rebate claims
  • We review invoices and documentation before submission
  • Typical rebate payment timeline: 8–12 weeks from complete application

What makes this different from calling a contractor directly

No equipment conflicts

A heat pump installer recommends heat pumps. An insulation company recommends insulation. We recommend whatever the audit data says is the right priority — which is sometimes neither.

Sequence matters

Installing a heat pump in a leaky, under-insulated house is a common and expensive mistake. We establish the right order of operations before any contractor is called.

Rebate sequencing is strict

The pre-retrofit audit must happen before any eligible work begins. We've seen homeowners lose thousands in rebates by missing this requirement. It's the first thing we establish.

Honest payback modelling

Contractor-provided savings estimates are frequently optimistic. Audit-based modelling from registered energy advisors uses measured data from your specific home, not generic assumptions.

Process FAQ

How long does the whole process take?

From consultation to rebate payment typically runs 4–8 months. The pre-retrofit audit can usually be scheduled within 2–4 weeks. Contractor scheduling and completion varies by upgrade type and season. Post-retrofit audit and rebate processing adds another 2–4 months after work is complete.

What does the audit cost?

EnerGuide audit costs vary by home size and provider. Most residential audits run $400–$600 for a detached home. The HRS Program rebates up to $600 toward audit costs, meaning the audit itself is often fully offset. We confirm exact costs during the consultation.

Can I do upgrades in stages rather than all at once?

Yes — and for most homeowners that's the right approach. We build phased plans. The key constraint is that any upgrade you want to claim under the HRS Program must happen after the pre-retrofit audit. If you've already done some work, those measures aren't eligible, but remaining planned work still can be.

Do you work with my existing contractor?

Yes. If you already have a contractor relationship you trust, we can work within that. Our role is the audit, planning, and rebate coordination — not gatekeeping your contractor choice. We do verify that contractors meet licensing requirements for rebate eligibility.
